Melrose Park Man Charged With Murder In 9-Year-Old's Death: Police

FRANKLIN PARK, IL — A Melrose Park man has been charged in a drive-by shooting that killed a 9-year-old boy attending his grandmother’s birthday party over the weekend, according to police.

Javier Murillo, 37, of the 10400 block of Medill Avenue, is charged with first-degree murder, police announced Tuesday.

Ulysses Campos of Chicago was playing near an alley shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday in the 2800 block of Elder Lane in Franklin Park and was shot in the chest from a moving vehicle, police said.

Authorities found a vehicle suspected in connection with the attack in Leyden Township, took a person of interest into custody and charged Murillo, according to police.

“This was a very tragic and sad event, and our prayers go out to the family of Ulysses,” police said in a news release.
