HINSDALE, IL — If you’re like many of your Hinsdale neighbors, you may spend a good part of the holiday season with your credit card in hand buying gifts for family and friends. Coming up soon is a chance to give back to the local community.

Giving Tuesday, which in 2024 falls on Dec. 3, is a day dedicated to supporting nonprofit and community groups. Since 2012, nonprofits worldwide have used the Tuesday after Thanksgiving to galvanize fundraising, rally volunteers and add momentum to their causes.

Maintaining funding is a constant challenge for many nonprofits that fill gaps and meet other needs in the Hinsdale area.

Here are five local nonprofits to consider getting behind on Giving Tuesday:

  1. Hinsdale Pantry, 22 N. Elm St., distributing food to those in need.
  2. Hinsdale Humane Society, 21 Salt Creek Lane, providing "innovative care and adoption services for all animals, including those that are harder to place."
  3. The Community House, 415 W. Eighth St., providing "community recreation and quality social services that meet vital needs within the surrounding communities."
  4. Hinsdale Historical Society, "bridges the past, present, and future by engaging the community with its history and architecture."
  5. Assistance League Chicagoland West, 120 E. Ogden Ave., "supports neighbors in need throughout DuPage and western Cook Counties. Our member volunteers identify unmet community needs, structure programs to address those issues, and raise the funds necessary to deliver quality solutions."
