Representatives from Hinsdale Township High School District 86 have proudly announced that Newsweek magazine has named the institution to the 2016 list of America’s Top High Schools.

According to Newsweek, the rankings assess schools based on a broad range of data to determine which educational facilities do the best job of preparing students for college. Hinsdale Central earned the 34th spot on the list of 500 high schools.

“Of course we are glad to see Hinsdale Central on the Newsweek list of top high schools,” Hinsdale Central Principal William Walsh said. “While being named to a list does not affect our high standards of educational excellence or how we teach students, it is always rewarding to be recognized for the hard work and combined efforts of faculty, staff and students in achieving great outcomes.”

For the high schools that participated in the survey, Newsweek created a weighted college readiness index based on the following indicators:

  • Number of counselor FTE (full time equivalent)
  • College acceptance and enrollment
  • SAT and ACT participation and performance
  • AP, IB and AICE participation and performance
  • Dual enrollments

On Newsweek’s “Beating the Odds” list, Hinsdale Central ranked 102nd out of 500. That list seeks to identify schools that do an excellent job of preparing their students for college while also overcoming the obstacles posed by students at an economic disadvantage.
