Huntley Library’s August Offerings, Something for Everyone

Library concludes its Summer Reading program but offers lots of activities next month.

 

The 2012 REALLY BIG Summer Reading Extravaganza is wrapping up next week but there’s still plenty do to at the library for the rest of the summer.

The Reading program concludes Saturday, Aug. 4 for children, teens and adults. Children are encouraged to bring their Big Bucks to the library to redeem their prizes.

Senior Coffee

Topic: The Lincoln Family after 1865

10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 20

What happened to Mary Lincoln and her sons after President Lincoln’s assassination? Historian Valerie Gugala has spent more than 30 years researching the Lincoln family.  Learn about Mary Lincoln’s travels and insanity trial, along with Robert’s law career and family life in Chicago.

 

August Adult Book Clubs

The Last Friday Book Club

Local Voices:  The Story of a Holocaust Survivor

6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7

Gilberts resident Ericka Yeger returns to share her mother’s compelling story of survival. Sarah Nussbacher survived the concentration camps of Auschwitz and Ravensbruck, and the loss of everyone in her immediate family at the hands of the Nazi regime. Themes may be unsuitable for younger audiences. For ages 13 & up.

 

Downloading eBooks for eReaders

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13

Learn how to browse titles, place holds, and check-out eBooks at the library. Learn how to transfer eBooks to an eReader, such as a Kobo, Nook, PanDigital Novel or Sony Reader. Call ext. 21 to sign up.

 

Downloading Kindle Books

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug.

Learn to browse, place holds, check-out, and transfer titles from the library’s Kindle Books collection to your Kindle or Kindle Fire.

 

Downloading eBooks/eAudiobooks for iPads, Tablets, and Smartphones

2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25

Learn how to download eBooks and eAudiobooks from the library’s collection. Download the appropriate app and a title to your device. Please bring your device, Huntley Library card, email address and email password. If you have an Apple device, please bring your Apple password.

Teen Travels Writing Contest

Month of August

Tell us about your summer adventures – where did you go, what new places did you discover, how did your experience(s) change you?  We’ll publish our favorite stories in the fall issue of Teen Zine. Submit entries at the Information Desk or online at ya.huntleylibrary.info/teentravels by August 31. One teen adventurer will win a fabulous prize! For Grades 6-12.

 

Weigh in on a Big Book

Guess the weight of the book at the Information Desk and you could win it! Closest guess wins the book.  For Grades 6-12.

 

Teen Tuesdays: Maximum Ride Madness

1 to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7

Fans of the Maximum Ride series are invited to celebrate the release of the final book, Nevermore. Bring your flock to the library for fun and games – plus a chance to win a copy of the new book! Grades 6-12.

 

Lunch and Skype with an Author

11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 13

Meet the funny and fabulous Kimberly Pauley, author of the Mina Hamilton books (Sucks to be Me and Still Sucks to be Me) and the newly released Cat Girl’s Day Off via the magic of Skype. She’ll talk about what it’s like to be an author, where her ideas for her books have come from, what it’s like living in London, with time to answer your questions, too! Lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., Skype from 12 to 12:30 p.m. Want to be in the know? Teen Zine

4 to 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17

Teen Zine is the library’s teen writers’ club.  Share your writing, artwork, and/or photography with the group and help us put together the next issue of our ‘zine.  Can’t make the meeting?  Submissions are accepted at the Information Desk or online at ya.huntleylibrary.info/tzonlineform. For Grades 6-12.

 

YU-GI-OH Battle Royale +

3:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 25

Join us at the library for an afternoon of game play.  Bring your trading card games (Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, etc.), board games, RPGs, etc., and meet new friends. For Grades 6-12.

 

Teen Book Club

4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 30

Read a BIG book this month, or something else that ties into the “big book” theme.  Meet other book lovers and get a chance to talk about the books you’ve been reading.  Bring a book (or more) to share/discuss with the group. For Grades 6-12.

Read to a Dog! 

Sessions begin at 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 2

Dyno, a one-year old Great Dane, will be in our Program Room to listen to your stories.  For families.

 

Life-size Whale

4 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3

This program is sooo BIG it’s being held in the Park District’s gym.  Drop in at the Huntley Park District gym to learn about this enormous creature and tour a true-to-size-replica!  For all ages. No tickets or registration required.

 

KIDS SIGN

10:15 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays, August 7 & 14

Learn to sign numbers, colors, abc’s and more during these story, music and fun-filled sessions. Ages 1-5 years. Dial

 

LANGUAGE STARS

Shake Rattle and Roll

Get up and get moving with this interactive music & motion Story Time.  Age birth-6 years.

 

Art Discovery 

5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 15                                                                                                                                                                                        Join us at the library for an art session mixing creativity and fun! Be sure and dress for a mess!  Class size is limited!

 

Kids’ Chess

7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 16                                                                                                                                                     Chess players of any skill level meet in the Program Room to play & strategize.  Beginners welcome. Adult family members are also invited to play. For ages 8 and up.

 

Feelin’ Groovy

2 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 19                                                                                                                                                     Bring the family and take a multigenerational walk down memory lane with a tour of “The James” history bus parked in our lot and share 60’s nostalgia!  Drop in.

 

Lego Club

6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 27

Come to Lego® Club! We’ll give you a suggested challenge; add imagination, the library’s Legos®, and your great building skills and show off the results! Watch for photos on Kids’ Corner page. For grades K-5.

BabyPalooza

Stories and songs with Miss Nora!  The last 10 minutes of BabyPalooza are reserved for social playtime.  For ages birth-23 months.

After stories, songs & fingerplays with Miss Jodi, children will complete a craft.  For ages 2-6.
