LAKE FOREST, IL — City officials announced the hiring of Barrington's police chief take over the reigns of the Lake Forest Police Department.

John Burke will succeed Karl Waldorf, who retired in April after 30 years with Lake Forest police, the final eight of which spent as chief.

“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to serve as the next Chief of Police for the City of Lake Forest,” Burke said in a statement.

“The Lake Forest Police Department is well-known for its professionalism and strong emphasis on community engagement," he added. "I look forward to working alongside such a respected group of officers to continue delivering exemplary service and fostering strong relationships with the Lake Forest community.”

“John’s strong commitment to community partnerships and interagency collaboration will further strengthen the department’s relationship with the community,” Mayor Randy Tack said in a statement.

Burke will be tasked with overseeing the planning, design and construction of a new police station in the Conway Park office complex, a nearly $30 million project that began earlier this year.

“Lake Forest is excited to welcome John Burke as the next Chief of Police,” said City Manager Jason Wicha. “While there were many outstanding local and national candidates, John’s extensive leadership experience and emphasis on employee growth and training will continue the tradition of integrity and service in the Lake Forest Police Department.”

The City Council is expected to sign off on Burke's appointment at its Sept. 3 meeting.
