Bat-Wielding Driver Beats Police Officer

Police said an angry driver making his way through Lincoln Park last weekend clubbed a 26-year-old suburban police officer with a baseball bat.

The victim, a Glenview police officer, was crossing the street with a friend at Lakeview Avenue and West Fullerton Parkway around 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 29, when a driver nearly ran them over, according to the report.

The officer—an Uptown resident—yelled at the driver, who was reportedly behind the wheel of a black Honda.

The driver then stopped the car and got out, armed with a baseball bat, police said.

The victim identified himself as a police officer. But that didn't stop the suspect from swinging the bat, hitting the officer on the left elbow and ribs, according to the report.

The officer tried using his training to detain his assailant but was unsuccessful. The suspect, who police say was likely in his 20s, broke free, got into his car and sped off.

The officer was able to memorize the man’s license plate number, police said. He gave it to those in the 19th District.

The victim reportedly declined medical attention. The report says his injuries were minor—a few abrasions from the bat. Representatives from the Glenview Police Department declined on Jan. 3 to comment on the attack, as the matter remained under investigation.
