UPDATE: Smashburger Reps. Backtrack on Diversey Location (PHOTOS)

The new $500,000 build-out will apparently not house the city's first Smashburger restaurant, a restaurant with other locations in the Chicago suburbs and even Saudi Arabia. However, the new location is still on the North Side.

Diversey Parkway will apparently not be home to Chicago’s first Smashburger, a media relations representative told Patch Friday night.

The restaurant was initially confirmed to be housed in a new $500,000 storefront being built in front of Lincoln Park Plaza. The future tenant of that building is again unclear.

The new 1,600-square-foot space at 560 W. Diversey Pkwy. was approved for construction in November, according to a building permit. When finished, the two-story space—owned by BJB Partners, LLC—will restructure the grand entrance to Lincoln Park Plaza, add a storefront and add seven parking spaces.

The public notice from the Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Development hanging in Lincoln Park Plaza's window saying the space was acquired by Smashburger isn't supposed to be there, the represntative said.

Representatives with BJB declined to comment on the construction project at this time, as did the construction team Timberwolf General Contracting. In addition, media relations officials with Smashburger were not able to provide a projected opening date this early in the project's construction.

Smashburger operates 10 other locations in the greater Chicago area, including Oak Lawn, La Grange and Schaumburg.

The building’s architect—Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture—is also behind notable buildings like Sprinkles at 50 E. Walton and Lululemon at 930 N. Rush.

The building’s expansion is one part of BJB’s plan to add to Lincoln Park Plaza, including replacing the adjoining Walgreens store with . That project is back in motion after as of October after a five-year delay.
