UPDATE: Clark Street Getting Face Lift Starting Thursday
The busy street is getting a new surface, among other things, for more than a mile in the heart of Lake View. Check out the schedule here on Patch.

More than one mile of Clark Street in the heart of Lake View is getting a complete makeover starting Thursday, and neighborhood officials are already thanking residents for their understanding with the upcoming inconvenience.
The Chicago Department of Transportation will be resurfacing Clark Street between Diversey Parkway and Addison Street, undoubtedly one of Lake View’s busiest corridors. In addition, concrete crews are planning to replace broken curb and gutters, as well as replacing sidewalk ramps that aren’t ADA compliant.
Alderman Tom Tunney (44th) released a statement Friday announcing the construction plans, saying CDOT plans to keep the noise and inconvenience at a minimum.

“This is part of our approach to renewing our city’s aging infrastructure,” the statement read. “…As you know, construction always involves some inconvenience, noise, and dust. The Department of Transportation will do everything possible to minimize the inconvenience and noise, and to conduct themselves as good and thoughtful neighbors through the course of their work.”

Tunney added that he’s made it clear that crews are to put “great importance on your convenience and the quality of life in this neighborhood through the whole term of this project.”
The schedule for the paving and reconstruction project is as follows:
- Oct. 2-5 – crews will grind off the existing pavement from Diversey to Addison; 3-4 blocks a day; 1 or 2 lanes at a time
- Oct. 8-9 – crews will remove and install new curb & gutter where needed (broken curbs)
- Oct. 11-15 – crews will pave from Diversey to Addison; 3-4 block a day
- Oct. 15-Nov. 1 – crews will install concrete bus pads at all the bus stops between Diversey to Addison
The repaving project is in conjunction with Lake View’s sidewalk replacement plan. Thus far crews has worked to replace more than 100 sidewalks in the neighborhood thanks to the Shared Cost Sidewalk Program. The project asks residents share the cost of sidewalk repair by paying $3 per square-foot of repairs.
