Cops: Man Shot Within 1 Block of Wrigley Was Weekend's Sixth Gunfire Victim

Chicago Police were investigating a shooting Monday that occurred early Sunday very close to Wrigley Field.

A man who investigators say has gang affiliations was shot Sunday within 1 block of Wrigley Field. The shooting was the sixth of the weekend, sources say.

Chicago Police News Affairs officers said Monday that the incident occurred at 3:20 a.m. Sunday in the 3500 block of North Sheffield Avenue outside a 7-Eleven store.

The 25-year-old victim was wounded in the back and taken down the street to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center for treatment. He was listed in serious condition on Monday, police said.

Residents in the area said that while they typically expect a rowdy bar crowd near Wrigley, they generally don't anticipate such a violent incident so close to home. Jackie Lowry, 35, was walking with her 10-month-old in a stroller around 1:45 p.m. Monday in the 3600 block of North Sheffield Avenue.

"Oh, it's definitely scary," she said. "You want to feel safe in your neighborhood. At times I've been frustrated with the drunks around here, but not because I'm afraid of a shooting. It's just not what you expect."

The staff at 7-Eleven declined to comment on the matter, deferring questions to the company's headquarters office.

Detectives are investigating the incident, which was the weekend's sixth city shooting, according to the Chicago Tribune.

The publication describes the shooter as a 5-foot 8-inch tall black man who is around 25 years old and weighs about 180 pounds. He has a White Sox tattoo and was last seen wearing a blue sweatshirt. He ran east from the scene.

The weekend's other five shootings were reported in East Garfield Park, Gresham, Kilbourn Park, Chicago Lawn and Washington Park.
