Cubs' Average Season-Ticket Price Up Less Than 1% In 2018

The increase breaks the team's trend of double-digit price hikes over the past 2 seasons.

CHICAGO, IL — The average price of Chicago Cubs season tickets is on the rise again in 2018, but the increase isn't nearly as steep as it has been in recent years. Next season's average price hike will only be less than 1 percent, a change for fans who have seen double-digit increases for two consecutive seasons, according to MLB.com. In fact, Cale Vennum, vice president for ticket sales, told MLB.com's Carrie Muskat on Thursday that seats in some sections of Wrigley Field — including the bleachers and some of the outfield field box and terrace box seats — could actually drop in price as much as 5.6 percent, while the cost of seats in other sections could go up as high as 9 percent.

Despite "still seeing incredible demand for Cubs tickets," Venum told the Chicago Tribune that the ball club was able to be "less aggressive" with season-ticket pricing for 2018 than it had been in the previous two seasons. The average season ticket price was up by 19.5 percent this past season, a year removed from the team's World Series victory. For that magical season, the average season-ticket price was up by 10 percent.

Although Cubs season ticket holders will pay less per ticket than single-game buyers, the exact price difference isn't known yet. Single-game tickets don't go on sale until Feb. 23, and their pricing hasn't been released by the team.

One seating area of Wrigley that isn't factored into the average cost of season tickets is the American Airlines 1914 Club, about 700 seats in a new 7,200 square-foot section behind home plate. The price for 1914 Club tickets runs from $400 to $695, and that cost includes taxes, as well as the cost of food, soft drinks and alcohol, the Tribune reports. The Cubs hope to have those seats sold out by the April 9 home opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the report added.
