Endgrain Restaurant Lands in Nearby Roscoe Village (PHOTOS)
Two brothers are taking on Roscoe Village's restaurant scene by opening the "new American" restaurant endgrain, expected to debut in February.
After 10 years working behind the scenes at restaurants around Chicago, chef Enoch Simpson is ready to take his culinary talents to neighoring Roscoe Village by opening his own restaurant: endgrain.
Located at 1851 W. Addison St.—just a few steps from the Brown Line CTA Station on Addison—the rustic, wood-inspired restaurant is expected to open in February. Endgrain will serve up dishes from 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. every day but Monday, and will be BYOB until further notice.
Described as “new American,” Enoch plans to present a “modern yet original menu” of casual cuisine with the integrity of fine dining. Selections include traditional comfort staples like a beef short rib pie and butternut squash with harissa, as well as global spins, such as the Moroccan spiced eggplant sandwich and kimchi.

The dinner menu will reportedly rotate regularly with ingredients sourced from local family farms. According to a statement, it will feature dishes like a smoked lake trout sandwich on marbled rye biscuit and fried chicken with buttermilk biscuits.
And while Enoch is bringing cooking chops learned at restaurants such as Girl and the Goat, Nightwood and Scylla, his brother Caleb’s carpentry skills helped craft the entire restaurant, making the endeavor a family affair.

The almost 1,200-square-foot space features unique pieces including a 25-seat bar top, hand built with more than 3,000 pieces of reclaimed and old growth lumber. The pairing is how the restaurant got its name.

But what some are most excited for are “Enoch’s Doughnuts,” the chef’s claim-to-fame after they were named a “Critic’s Pick” in 2010s Time Out Eat Out awards. The sweet treats will be served up with La Colombe coffee on weekdays starting at 7 a.m., and 8 a.m. on weekends.
And while endgrain is replacing Terragusto—the pricier Italian restaurant that closed in Aug. 2011—Enoch says most menu items are priced between $8 and $20.
