Health Inspection: Cassava Bread Fails

Another round of restaurant inspections are showing a few Lake View favorites are completely missing the mark.

Patch examined heath inspection reports in Lake View, and a new slew of businesses were examined since our last inspection report.

Information was compiled using publicly available data published to the website of the Chicago Department of Public Health's Food Protection Program.

Restaurants can pass, pass with conditions or fail using a standardized procedure. Establishments that pass don't have any critical or serious vocations. Those that receive 'pass with conditions' had serious violations, but the violations were corrected during the inspection. Failed establishments had serious violations that weren't correctable during the inspection. A fail rating does not mean the business's license is automatically suspended.

  • This children’s party venue and cooking school passed its health inspection, but not before employees were asked to take care of a few items. According to the report, owners need to “clean and sanitize sticky floor,” label all foods not in their original container and declutter the hallway leading to the fire exit.

Jamba Juice

2800 N. Clark St.
Pass

  • This popular smoothie chain's health inspection revealed just three items owners needed to address. First, employees need to clean the food shelves inside the cooler. Second, they need to replace a broken floor tile in the prep area. And lastly, both vents in the men’s and women’s bathroom need to actually work.

Al’s Beef

3420 N. Clark St.
Pass with Conditions

  • Health inspectors issued a “serious citation” to the owners of Al’s Beef when they arrived and there wasn’t a certified food service manager at the store. Even though it needed to clean the ice chute at the soda machine and the potato slicer in the kitchen, Al’s Beef passed, but only if it makes some changes.

P S Bangkok Restaurant

3345 N. Clark St.
Pass

  • Health inspectors took a peek inside this restaurant and found a few items that needed to be changed. According to the report, owners need to “remove the dead insects inside lightshields,” clean the grease trap by the dish washer and store wash cloths in sanitizing solution at all times.

Cassava Bread

3336 N. Clark St.
Fail

  • If the recent sex offender storming Cassava Bread wasn’t enough, the restaurant also recently failed its health inspection. A serious violation was issued when a hand-washing sink was clogged and not up to plumbing code. Combined with thermometers missing from inside coolers and unnecessary clutter in the basement potentially leading to rodent harborage, inspectors failed Cassava Bread.

Red Mango

2806 N. Clark St.
Pass

  • Health inspectors passed this frozen yogurt shop in Lake View, but not before finding a few issues. There was a thermometer missing from a cooler, the wiping cloths weren’t in sanitizing solution, and there were unnecessary items in a storage area potentially leading to rodents.

Scooter’s Frozen Custard

1658 W. Belmont Ave.
Pass

  • Owners at Scooter's were only advised to change one thing: Remove the unnecessary items from a food storage area to prevent rodents from calling it home. Other than that, they passed with flying colors.
