Man Dragged from Boystown Bar, Kicks Officer

After punching a security guard, the out-of-towner refused to leave, kicking an officer in the kneecap on his way out.

Chicago police placed one man in custody over the weekend when he punched a security guard in the face, kicked an officer in the kneecap and was dragged from a popular Boystown bar, police say.

Anthony Harper, 26, was arrested at Sidetrack at 3349 N. Halsted St. and is being charged with one count of aggravated battery of a police officer and one count of simple battery, according to Chicago Police News Affairs. Harper’s home address is in Brooklyn, New York.

Officers were called to Sidetrack around 2:20 a.m. Sunday after receiving calls about a man being punched in the face, according to the report. Employees at the bar said Harper was intoxicated, was “causing a disturbance” and was asked to leave by a 51-year-old security guard.

That’s when Harper punched the man in the face, causing bruising above his left eye, police say. When police arrived, security were holding the man on the ground.

When officers tried to take Harper out of the bar, however, he stiffened up and wouldn’t move in an attempt to resist being arrested. According to the report, police “used reasonable force to place the subject into custody.”

The officers finally got the man to his feet, but Harper “began to use dead weight to deter officers from escorting him outside,” the report says.

On the way out of the bar toward the squad car, Harper kicked one of the policemen “violently, striking him in the right knee causing immediate pain.”

Harper was transported to the 19th District Police Station at 850 W. Addison St. for processing and was placed into custody.
