Stabbing, Gap Ambush, Gang Shooting in 19th District

From a crazed man sedated by police to a stabbing in Wrigleyville, these are the 19th District Police Department's most recent list of notable police reports.

The following reports are based on actual police reports from Chicago's 19th Police District between Dec. 3 and Dec. 9.

The district provides police protection on Chicago's north side, from Lawrence Avenue on the north, Fullerton Avenue on the south, the Chicago River on the west and Lake Michigan on the east. 

Robbery Chokehold

Monday, Dec. 3 at 3 a.m.

Police were called to the 4200 block of North Hazel Street Monday after a 37-year-old man woke up on the floor in his building’s entryway without any money. According to the report, the man entered the building and before the door closed, two men in their 20s snuck in behind him.

While one of the suspects began choking the man from behind, the other rummaged through his pockets. The man passed out from the chokehold, and when he woke up, his wallet and phone were missing. Police are still looking for the two men, according to the report.

Convenience Store Burglary

Tuesday, Dec. 4 at 2:50 a.m.

The owner of Dba Best Food Mart, 2451 N. Lincoln Ave., called police Tuesday when he found his store trashed and burglarized. According to the report, a man believed to be in his late 20s smashed the front glass door and stole $700 worth of Newport cigarettes, $90 of Marlboro cigarettes and $320 worth of other items. The cash register was unopened on the floor. The man remained at large as of Dec. 10.

Gap Clothing Ambush

Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 2:20 p.m.

Police responded to a robbery at the Lake View Gap, 3216 N. Broadway St. Wednesday when two criminals ambushed the store, stealing $1,100 worth of merchandise. Police report that a 24-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman ran into the store, snatching sweaters, hooded sweatshirts, pants and shirts before bolting out the door.

The two suspects jumped into a red SUV that was waiting outside the store. None of the stolen merchandise had been recovered as of Dec. 10. Police are still investigating the crime.

Armed Robber Strikes at Bus Stop

Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 3:10 p.m.

A 57-year-old North Side woman called police Wednesday when a burly man pulled a knife on her a bus stop and stole her purse, police said. According the report, the man, who's believed to be in his 20s, approached the woman at 2501 N. Stockton Drive, pulled a knife from his jacket and said, “Give me your purse or I’ll cut you.” The woman handed over her Coach purse which contained with her wallet, ID, camera and Social Security card before the man took off in his car.

'Gangster Disciple' Shoots Man

Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 1:06 a.m.

A 19-year-old man was shot in the ankle Wednesday morning, and according to police, it was a gang-related crime. An unknown man in a black hooded sweatshirt fired the gun in the 4700 block of North Sheridan Road. The bullet hit the back of the man’s ankle and was lodged in his foot. He was rushed to Weiss Memorial Hospital where police say he was in good condition.

Police believe the attack to be related to the Gangster Disciples, a group that apparently has territory in Lake View and Uptown.

Aggravated Battery with a Beer Bottle

Thursday, Dec. 6 at 12:39 a.m.

Police were called to the 2600 block of North Sheffield Avenue early Thursday morning when a 19-year-old man was hit in the face with a glass bottle. According to the police report, a man in his 30s chucked the bottle at the victim, hitting him in the face and causing minor bruising. Police are still searching for the suspect.

Robber Snags Cell Phone, Cash on Sheridan

Thursday, Dec. 6 at 12:25 a.m.

A 47-year-old man was jumped by two men in their 20s Thursday morning in the 4000 block of North Sheridan Road, police said. The man was walking down the sidewalk when one of the men punched him in the face and demanded his wallet. Police say the men took his cell phone and $250 cash. They are still looking for the suspects.

Thieves Follow Men Home

Friday, Dec. 7 at 12:10 a.m.

Police responded to the 1100 block of West Barry Avenue Friday morning when three men, all believed to be around 19 years old, robbed a 33-year-old man. According to the report, the victim and his friend were walking home from a bar when the passed the robbers on the street.

When they got home, the men walked in the door behind them, punched the victim in the face and said, “Give me your wallet.” They also stole the man’s phone before getting away.

Robbers Surprise Texting Woman

Friday, Dec. 7 at 4:18 p.m.

A 22-year-old woman was robbed by two men in their late 20s Friday afternoon when she was walking down the street, eyes locked on her cell phone. According to the report, the woman didn’t notice the men until they were on each side of her. One snatched her Coach purse and they both took off. The woman chased them, but stopped when the two ran in opposite directions.

Police Sedate Crazed Man 

Saturday, Dec. 8

Police were called to the 1500 block of West George Saturday when they heard a man screaming from a person’s backyard. When they got there, they found a 22-year-old man yelling while struggling with a 42-year-old man. A witness at the scene said, “He is high off PCP or something and I can’t control him anymore. Can you Taser him officer?”

After yelling at the man to calm down, the police officer Tasered him, but the man got back up and began punching, kicking and spitting, according to the report. Police handcuffed him and injected him with a sedative. He was suspected of using alcohol and other drugs.

Robbers Fire Paintball Gun

Sunday, Dec. 9 at 11:55 p.m.

Two men in their early 20s robbed a 19-year-old man using a paintball gun Sunday, police say. According to the report, the two men approached the victim in an alley and hit him in the head with the end of a paintball gun. The gun accidentally fired, shooting a yellow paintball into the victim’s hair. The robbers stole the man’s iPhone and wallet before getting away, the report said.

Bar Stabbing, Fecal Flinging

Sunday, Dec. 9 at 12:20 a.m.

A North Side man ambushed a man in a Wrigleyville bathroom Sunday morning, according to police, stabbing him in the neck with a broken beer bottle.

Gregg Greaves, 23, was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm. Greaves, who lives in the 4700 block of North Beacon Street, stabbed the man at the Red Ivy Bar at 3525 N. Clark St., Chicago Police said.
