Chief Kevin Shaughnessy to Leave Lemont Police Department in 2013

Shaughnessy said he will move on at the end of next year after 10 years of service, opening the possibility of a run for Will County Sheriff in 2014.

Police Chief Kevin Shaughnessy will leave the next year after nearly a decade of service.

Shaughnessy confirmed Thursday that he will step down from his position at the end of 2013, and could run for Will County Sheriff the following year.

He has been with the since 2004.

"I've talked to (Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves), and he knows my plans for next year," Shaughnessy said. "I love my job and the Lemont community, but I don't want to be in a position where I'm complacent. By the end of next year it will be 10 years serving the department, and I feel that's a good time to step down and think about what's next."

On Wednesday, Sun-Times Media reported that Shaughnessy is interested in running for sheriff in 2014.

According to the report, the Will County Police Chief's Association held its annual golf for Special Olympics on June 14, and one of the holes featured the sign, "Shaughnessy for Sheriff."

"A friend made that sign, and I agreed to it just to see what people would think of the idea," Shaughnessy said. "There's no official announcement right now. It's just something I'm considering."

Shaughnessy, who served 25 years with the Illinois State Police before coming to Lemont, said he would run as a Democrat. He would have to move from his current home in Tinley Park, which is four blocks outside of Will County.

"It's a big decision, but I think Will County would be a good fit for me," he said. "I've experienced both the state and municipal side of law enforcement, so I would love the opportunity to work with the people at the county level."

For now, Shaughnessy said he remains committed to serving the .

"I love Lemont, so I'm not looking forward to leaving," he said. "Right now I'm still here, continuing to give my heart and soul to my job—nothing less."
