Lemont Police Finish First in National Traffic Safety Competition

The department placed first among 57 agencies in 2011 for its accomplishments in traffic safety enforcement.

The  was recently awarded first place in the 2011 National Law Enforcement Challenge,  the International Association of Chiefs of Police announced last week.

Lemont ranked first among 57 municipalities with agencies of 11 to 25 sworn officers, according to Lemont Police Sgt. Joe Miller.

The National Law Enforcement Challenge is a recognition program that gives agencies an opportunity to highlight their accomplishments and rewards those that take the extra steps to save lives and reduce injuries proactively through traffic safety efforts, according to a release.

"This program promotes professionalism in traffic safety enforcement and encourages agencies to share best practices and programs with each other," Miller said in the release.

This year marks the fourth time Lemont has been recognized by the program, Miller said.

The award will be presented at the Law Enforcement Challenge luncheon during the IACP's annual conference in San Diego, CA, from Sept. 29 through Oct. 3.

Last month, Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnnesy announced that the department was runner-up in the 2012 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge, which highlights achievements in traffic safety education and enforcement activities.

The challenge, coordinated by the Illinois Association of Police Chiefs, focuses on three major safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding.
