Lemont Police Finish Second in Statewide Traffic Safety Competition
The department earned second place in the 2012 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge for its safety education and enforcement activities.

The was recently awarded second place in the 2012 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge for its efforts in promoting traffic safety.
Lemont Police Chief Kevin Shaughnnesy announced Thursday that the department was runner-up in the competition, which highlights achievements in traffic safety education and enforcement activities.
The challenge, coordinated by the Illinois Association of Police Chiefs, focuses on three major safety priorities: occupant protection, impaired driving and speeding.

According to a press release, departments were evaluated on their policies and guidelines, training, incentives and recognition, public information and education, enforcement activity and effectiveness of programs.
Lemont police were evaluated against comparable municipal departments with 11 to 25 sworn, full-time officers, accoriding to the release.

The Lemont Police Department will now be entered into the National Law Enforcement Challenge, where it will be evaluated against comparable agencies nationwide.
Last year, in the national competition.
"We will continue in our efforts to make Lemont roads safer," Shaughnessy said in the release. "We're currently engaged in another traffic safety campaign that runs from June 22 through July 4, and have scheduled day and nighttime safety belt enforcement zones and roadside safety checks. Please remember 'Click It or Ticket' and 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.'"
Lemont police were recently awarded a laser technoloy speed measurement device, Truspeed, to use during speed enforcement intiatives throughout the village, the release stated.
The department has also received speed radar units, portable breath test instruments, an in-car video camera system and grant funding from the Illinois Department of Transportation's Division of Traffic Safety.
