Burglars Deplete Inventory at Virgin Mobile Flagship Store

Police said the Virgin Mobile store on North Clark Street was ransacked overnight.

Police had one person in custody Monday afternoon in connection with an overnight break-in to a Lincoln Park cell phone store.

Officers did not say around 2:20 p.m. whether the individual had been charged. But they did confirm that he or she was being questioned regarding an early-morning incident in which burglars reportedly pried their way into the local Virgin Mobile flagship store to steal cash and wipe out the business' inventory.

At least $10,000 worth of equipment and phones were reported missing from the store, which is in the 2500 block of North Clark Street, a Chicago Police News Affairs officer said on Monday.

Police said they believe the thieves broke in around 3 a.m. When officers got to the scene, they found the back door pried open.

Company representatives held a grand opening for the Clark Street store this past July.

"Virgin Mobile sells phones primarily through its website and partnerships with big box retailers such as Best Buy and Radio Shack, so the store is meant to familiarize customers with the company's brand rather than drive sales," reported Clark Street Lincoln Park, at that time, citing that the local store is the springboard for the company's new retail initiative.
