Chicago Cop Reprimanded For Not Filing Report In Bike Path Attack

The victim was severely beaten in an incident earlier this month in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

CHICAGO, IL — A Chicago police officer is accused of not filing a report concerning a man who was severely beaten on a Gold Coast neighborhood bike path. A report about the incident eventually was filed days after the attack when the victim's parents called 911 several times, the Chicago Tribune reports.

According to police, the attack happened at around 6:30 p.m. May 5 along the lakefront in the 1200 block of North Lake Shore Drive. The 21-year-old victim suffered a fractured skull and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was treated in intensive care.

Police, however, didn't release photos and a video of a suspect in the attack until Monday, nearly 10 days after the incident. Officials weren't sure what delayed the filing of the report, but Deputy Police Supt. Anthony Riccio told the Tribune that initially it was believed that the victim had fallen on the bike path and not been attacked.

Chicago police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said the officer who failed to make the report has been given a formal reprimand.

"The CPD takes that omission seriously, and has disciplined the officer," he told the Tribune.
