The man was beating another man on the ground and wouldn't stop, police said.

A bat-wielding man who was attacking another man on the North Side was shot by a Chicago police officer at about 4 a.m. Monday. Police responded to a report of a fight in the 1500 block of North Halsted on the North Side, in the Goose Island neighborhood, where they encountered one man beating another on the ground with a baseball bat, according to Chicago Police News Affairs.
When told to drop the bat, the man continued to beat the other man and struck him in the head, police said, and the officer fired to protect the man on the ground. Both men were taken to a hospital. The man with the bat is listed in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The other man’s condition is not known.
A pair of sneakers and a pool of blood were spotted in the road as police shut down the street for a few hours to investigate. Commuters trying to get to the nearby El station were diverted.
