Armitage Doughnut Shop to Serve Late-Night Crowd

An increasingly popular four-location doughnut chain, which recently earned a national honor, will be extending hours this summer to serve those with a late-night sweet tooth.

Ice cream, gelato and Italian ice shops are all gearing up for their standard extended summer hours. So, too, is the hottest spot in Lincoln Park to satisfy your gourmet doughnut craving.

Glazed & Infused doughnut shop, 939 W. Armitage Ave., will be catering this summer to the "late-night" crowd. The move is in response to the store's increasing popularity—Zagat Survey recently named it among nine such companies in the country that are "changing the landscape of doughnuts."

The Lincoln Park store, which opened at the end of January, is taking a cue from the company's Wicker Park spot which typically sees a strong midnight rush, said manager James Gray.

"It's a very interesting demographic of people who are out late and want a little doughnut," he said. "Of course, there are people out and about, but there are those who, it's 11 o'clock and they're waiting to go to sleep and they are just dying for a late-night chocolate doughnut. If they can get one that's not Dunkin Donuts, they'll do it."

Gray manages all four Glazed & Infused stores. He says Lincoln Park will be the second one testing out the late-night hours. On Fridays, the Armitage storefront will be open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. and on Saturday, it will close around 3 p.m. and reopen from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

"The late-night hours are exclusively until sellout," he said. "And we make an afternoon round of fresh doughnuts for those customers. There will be a second production route just for the late crowd but once they're gone, they're gone."

He says the Wicker Park store usually sells around 200 doughnuts between midnight and 2 a.m. Sometimes, the options will surprise customers.

"Those doughnuts are chef's choice so they don't necessarily come off the menu," he said. "They're very unique. You'll see things that are very different from the standard."

The increasingly popular chain, boasts a dozen different doughnut varieties made fresh every morning. "Standard" options include red velvet, blueberry-lemon cake, maple bacon long johns, egg nog-bourbon, Crème brûlée and others.

Gray declined to confirm rumors that have been circulating about Glazed & Infused doughnuts soon being available at area Whole Foods stores.

"We're busy busy," he said. "This has been such a wonderful experience for us. We couldn't be happier."
