Chicago's First Insomnia Cookies Lands on Lincoln, Near DePaul (PHOTOS)

The first Insomnia Cookies in Illinois has opened right here in Lincoln Park. Never heard of the company? Read on to learn what it's all about.

Sometimes, a sweet tooth fix is as simple as milk and cookies.

That's where Insomnia Cookies comes in. The store's parent company, Serve U Brands, opened a location Tuesday at 2260 N. Lincoln Ave. in Lincoln Park. It's the first of 32 Insomnia Cookies that's landed in Chicago.

The initial philosophy behind the store was simple—it's late, you're hungry and you don't want to leave the house. Open until 3 a.m. every day, Insomnia Cookies will bring you a cookie, ice cream, brownie and some milk.

"Insomnia Cookies was born out of the dislike of heavy meals late at night, love of food delivery and the realization that by the time you get hungry at night, nothing is open," company representatives said in an e-mail earlier this week.

The local, bright purple storefront is conveniently located near DePaul University, where employees can capitalize on late-night study sessions.

"We're primarily located on or around college campuses," Renee Sarnecky, the company's marketing manager, said at the store on Wednesday. " ... We started in 2003. Owner Seth (Berkowitz) was at (University of Pennsylvania) and he actually started delivering cookies out of his dorm room."

Insomnia cookies features nine standard oven-baked cookie varieties and three deluxe options. All are served warm.

The standard recipes include peanut butter, Snickerdoodle, double chocolate chunk and M&M, among others. They're priced at $1.25 each. You can also buy in bulk—$12 for 12, $17 for 18 or $22 for 24. Deluxe cookies are $2.50.

Cookie cakes, "cookiewiches" made using ice cream and any two cookies, and other frozen treats are also available.

The delivery minimum is $6 and the fee is 99 cents, Sarnecky said.

Lincoln Park residents will find Insomnia Cookies employees trolling the street this week in honor of the store's grand opening. They'll be handing out free cookie vouchers and other coupon deals, many of which are also available on the company's Facebook page.

Sarnecky said store owners will be working closely with DePaul University.

"We'll be doing a lot of work and outreach with students," she said, adding that you may see Insomnia Cookies at local charitable events. "We love helping out the community. It's a big part of what we do."
