Chicago Area Jewel-Osco Stores Eliminating Self-Checkout

Jewel-Osco stores in the Chicago area are getting rid of the self-checkout lanes in an effort to offer more personalized service, according to the Daily Herald.

Stores in Frankfort, Glen Ellyn, Schaumburg and a few other suburbs as well as Chicago stores at Ohio and State streets and Harlem and Foster avenues have already gotten rid of the lanes. More stores will follow suit within the next six months to a year, a Jewel-Osco spokeswoman told the newspaper.

New ownership is aiming to create an environment where they can "better connect" with their customers and plans to add shorter express lanes and hire more cashiers, according to the Daily Herald. 

The change is not the first under the new owners. In recent months, Jewel got rid of its preferred card program and initiated a mandatory cart-to-car policy where baggers are expected to follow customers, and their carts, out to their cars.
