Cops: Area Thieves Use Tow Trucks to Steal Cars

Police issued a community alert in the department's nearby central district on Thursday stating that criminals have recently using tow trucks to steal vehicles. They're also breaking into cars to take personal belongings, cops said.

Chicago police warned central district residents on Thursday to be on the lookout for car thieves who are striking in the area.

The closest incidents were reported in the nearby 18th district, which includes parts of Lincoln Park. Police said the crimes have also been prevalent in the department's 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 9th, 10th and 12th districts.

During the month of February, an "above average" number of stolen car and theft from vehicle incidents were logged, according to police.

"Offenders (use) a 'slim Jim" type device or pry tool and force entry into vehicles," police said, in an alert issued on Thursday afternoon. "(They) then either take the vehicle or remove personal belongings from the vehicle."

Incidents involving the use of tow trucks in car thefts have also been reported. Police said the descriptions of the culprits vary.

The department's Bureau of Detectives released the following tips to decrease chances of being a victim:

  • Park your motor vehicle in a well-lit location.
  • Be conscious of any suspicious persons or vehicles loitering about.
  • Completely secure your vehicle when leaving, for any duration.
  • Remove any visible items from the interior of the motor vehicle, such as cellular phones, lap top computers, purses/backpacks, etc.
  • Don’t leave valuable documents in the glove compartment.
  • Never leave your motor vehicle unlocked or running while unattended.
  • If you must leave a key with an attendant, leave only the ignition key.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings.
  • Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc ...) of possible offenders.
  • Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police.
  • If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information.
  • Dial 911 immediately and remain on scene when possible.
