Feigenholtz: Home Heating Help Available Until Money Runs Out

Don't let an unseasonably warm winter prevent you from getting the help you need, officials say.

State Rep. Sara Feigenholtz (D-Chicago) doesn't want finicky temperatures to prevent people from applying for an energy assistance program that will help them stay afloat this winter.

Ghe Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Winter Heating Program provides grants to low-income households to assist in paying gas and electric bills.

“Too often, families struggling financially are forced to choose between keeping their home warm, the lights on, or the phone running,” said Feigenholtz. “LIHEAP can help relieve some of this burden to ensure that all Illinois families stay safe and warm this winter season.”

LIHEAP-eligible residents with a demonstrated need for help can receive reconnection assistance, furnace replacement assistance and one-time or monthly help with gas or electric utility bills. The monthly income limits are $1,396 for a household of one; $1,891 for a household of two and $2,386 for a household of three.

For additional income restrictions and information regarding LIHEAP assistance, local residents should contact the Community and Economic Development Association of Cook County (CEDA) at 800-571-2332 or visit the association's website.
