For the second year in a row, Lincoln Park resident Jack Porter, 25, will be fundraising and participating in the SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run to raise awareness for prostate cancer. Jack and his grandmother, Myrna Porter of Chicago, will be heading up Team Papa Hat 2021 at the virtual event which takes place on Sunday, September 26, 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Central Time.

Team Papa Hat 2021 is in remembrance of Jack's grandfather and Myrna's husband, Stuart Porter, who died of prostate cancer. Myrna was one of the original founders of the SEA Blue event 16 years ago after her husband received a prostate cancer diagnosis.

"I am lucky enough to be living in the Chicago area so I can play a larger role in helping raise money for prostate cancer education and support," said Porter who has made a goal to raise $10,000 for this year's event. Last year, Porter raised $7,000 when the event was virtual as well.

SEA Blue is a celebration of life, of those who have risen to the challenge to fight prostate cancer, of the lives that have been lost to the disease, and of the people we will help to combat it in the future through Support, Education, Advocacy and Awareness (the SEA in SEA Blue). There is no registration fee for this year’s event, but you must register to attend. At event time, event participants will be joined together via an app which allows them to interact together from different locations.

“September is Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, and there is an urgent need for prostate cancer support, education, advocacy, and awareness here in Chicagoland and across the country,” said Likowski. “This year alone, nearly 250,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Additionally, every 15 minutes a man will die from this disease,” she added.
