PAWS Showcasing Pets for Michigan Avenue Window Shoppers

Those strolling along Michigan Avenue this weekend will have the opportunity to window shop for more than just clothes and jewlery.

Some strolling along Michigan Avenue this weekend will not be window shopping for jewelry, shoes or a new handbag. Instead, they'll be window shopping for a new best friend.

Lincoln Park's PAWS Chicago Adoption Center is taking pets downtown Sunday for "Angels With Tails" along Michigan Avenue and Oak Street. The adoption event gives passersby an opportunity to stroll the sidewalks and "press your nose against storefront windows to sample the joy a pet can bring to your life," coordinators said.

Hundreds of homeless puppies, kittens, dogs and cats will be showcased at about 40 stores from more than 20 Chicago shelter and rescue organizations, according to PAWS.

"(It was) an event that, for the first time, brought together shelters and rescue groups to showcase Chicago’s homeless pets available for adoption on the sidewalks and storefronts ..." said a PAWS spokeswoman, in a news release. "That day, many homeless animal lives were saved and the public was first informed that a staggering 42,500 plus dogs, cats, puppies and kittens were needlessly killed in Chicago in 1997 alone."

Since that day, the number of animals killed each year in Chicago has been reduced by more than half, according to PAWS.

The event will run Sunday, May 19, between noon and 4 p.m. It will include 43 storefronts starting at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Oak Street.

You'll find furry friends along Michigan Avenue south to Ontario Street and on Oak Street, west just beyond Rush Street.
