Shop in Lincoln Park on Small Business Saturday

Start your holiday shopping at locally owned stores during Small Business Saturday.

Small Business Saturday is on Nov. 24 this year, two days after Thanksgiving. It is a day for everyone to support the small businesses that their community thrives on.

American Express founded the day in 2010 to help small businesses get exposure during the holiday season, when they might be otherwise overlooked.

With retailers buzzing around the holidays, it is important to support local small businesses that rely on their neighbors in order to continue prospering and building the local economy in Lincoln Park.

Representatives from the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce have been promoting the day as a way to inject the local economy and kickstart the biggest shopping time of the year. Many members of the Lincoln Park Merchants Association are also on board.

"We're trying to get back the feeling of what Lincoln Park has to offer as a shopping district," said Martha Hofert, merchants association president. "We have some newish stores in the area and it really brings an exciting energy to our neighborhood."

Last year, 100 million people nationwide participated in Small Business Saturday by shopping at locally owned stores to help boost the economy and their communities.

Among participants this year is Comfort Me, 701 W. Armitage Ave., which sells women's apparel, accessories, home furnishings and gifts.

Everything in the store will be 10 percent off on Small Business Saturday. Prices for holiday items will be cut in half, owners said, and customers will be able to drink egg nog and holiday treats as they shop.
