This Week's Pet: Affectionate Pup Defies Odds

Despite a rocky first year of life, this week's featured pet, Delila, has a fantastic personality. She first came to PAWS Chicago this past summer and staff say she'll make for a great addition to most households.

Delila is a lovely 1-year-old Shepherd mix who had a difficult start to life.

Given up to Animal Control by a previous owner, Delila was in rough shape in June, when she arrived at the PAWS Chicago Adoption Center. The young pup has scar tissue around her neck, likely from months of wearing a collar that was much too tight.

At about 38 pounds, the sweet girl was also underweight. Despite the neglect she faced in her puppyhood, Delila has the sweetest personality and just wants a human of her own to love.

She recently spent some time in a home environment and made a fun addition to the household. As long as she is walked regularly, Delila seems to be house-trained, but she needs some practice getting used to a crate. An energetic girl, she loves taking long walks and would make a great workout partner.

Delila likes to run and jump, and would be a natural at canine sports like flyball and agility. She is also highly compatible with other dogs and would enjoy having some doggie play dates with her new adopters and their canine friends. After some exercise, she is very cuddly and affectionate.

Because Delila didn’t have much training or socialization as a young pup, she will need extra patience as she settles into her new home. Delila is happiest when she is around people and dislikes being by herself. She would be best-suited for a home where there is someone home most of the time, and where no one will be bothered if she barks at first when alone.

Delila enjoys bones, rawhides, and other chewable treats, and is very trainable with the help of food. She tends to be jumpy and mouthy when excited, so an adults-only home with caretakers who will work on appropriate play would be ideal. This outstandingly clever canine is looking for an experienced owner who can give her the time and training to set her up for success.

Give Delila a place to call home, and you will have a devoted companion for life.
