CHICAGO – Scholar, artist and curator HL Doruelo has organized Community Workshops taking place at Horner Park, 2741 W Montrose Ave., meant to serve the Irving Park nearby communities. Kiam Marcelo Junio and Crystle Diño will be guiding attendees through a series of events taking place Sunday, May 28 from 2 - 5:30 p.m. As part of the Links Hall’s Co-MISSION series curated by HL Doruelo, join artists from the Chicago Filipinx community to celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Creative Mythmaning (2 - 3 p.m.) and Freedom Movement Alignment (3 - 5 p.m.) will be guided by Junio and Diño.

Many people think of creativity only in the arts but each person is the author, composer, dancer, and director of their own story. In this workshop, Junio will share different creation myths within the Philippine diaspora and inspire connection to your innate creativity and intuition to explore unique personal narratives.

FMA (Freedom. Movement. Alignment.) is a holistically integrated public program of empowerment self-defense, Filipino Martial Arts, and body-based awareness exercises practiced within a trauma-informed and healing engagement community. In this training session with Diño, you will nurture trust in your own power through mindfulness movement and self-defense practices.

Following the presentations and workshops, snacks and a community chat with the artists will take place as a chance to connect further with these guides.

Sponsored by Links Hall, the Co-MISSION Curatorial Residency program supports a group of independent Chicago dance curators, producers, and social practice artists presenting new and existing performances by and for their communities. Artists will present work both at Links Hall and at neighborhood locations outside of a formal theater environment for their respective communities.
