Gas Prices Rise: Lincoln Square Surpasses U.S. Average

CNN Money reported Monday the average price for a gallon of gasoline in the U.S. is $3.73. Gas prices are about 50 cents higher at many stations in Lincoln Square.

Most drivers have noticed this month's rising price of gasoline.

CNN Money reported Monday that the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in America has increased to $3.73—more than 13 percent during the past 32 days. And the cost of filling a 15-gallon gas tank in Lincoln Square is $8.06 more than it was one year ago, according to AAA Fuel Finder.

As of Tuesday afternoon, gas prices in the neighborhood ranged from $4.39 at the Shell at 4346 N. Western Ave. to $4.24 at the Mobil at 4638 N. Damen Ave., according to Chicago Gas Prices. At $3.99 per gallon, the least expensive gas in the area was being sold at Roscoe Village's Speedway, 3354 N. Damen Ave.

CNN Money is crediting the price increase to a combination of factors, including rising crude oil prices, production cuts and refinery closings

The Chicago Tribune reported a number of refinery issues last week that affected gas prices, including an overhaul of BP's Whiting refinery and a fire at a site in Ohio.

AAA predicts local refinery issues will continue to push gas prices up in the months to come, according to the Tribune article.
