GlobalFest Expands to Weeklong Celebration at St. Matthias
The worldly food and drink festival isn't just a community event; this year includes more learning components and education.

Lincoln Square is known for a neighborhood of diversity, but this week, hundreds of cultures will descend on the area for the St. Matthias Elementary School GlobalFest.
Now in its 9th year, GlobalFest is a night of food and drink, but in 2013, the school is celebrating with weeklong festivities and learning.
Students will explore what makes different cultures unique with themes for each grade level, according to a news release sent from the school. Themes center around birthday and harvest celebrations, fairy tales, educational systems and cuisines from around the world.

Tuesday’s event is a Geography Bee, where parents can watch their kids answer questions on worldwide trivia. Wednesday, students will display art throughout the school with a musical and special appearance by the choir.
The events all culminate in a community-wide celebration Saturday. This tradition at the school includes a tasting menu from all parts of the globe, from fresh sushi to Mexican barbecue. A ticket includes food, and adult beverages are also available for an additional price.

GlobalFest will run from 6 to 11 p.m. at St. Matthias Elementary School, 4910 N. Claremont Avenue.
Money raised from the celebration will benefit the St. Matthias in curriculum improvements, new text books and science materials.
