Waters Elementary Catches Fire—On Purpose

The elementary school's ecology department will be setting its native gardens on fire to improve the planting season for the spring.

Waters Elementary is catching fire—but on purpose.

Pending the weather, the school’s ecology program will be conducting prescribed burns of its native gardens. The fires will most likely happen Friday or Saturday afternoon, Waters Ecology teacher Pete Leki said.

Burns are necessary to maintain the eco system. It suppresses weeds, and lets native seeds sprout up, according to a notice given to nearby residents. Fire also darkens the soil, allowing for the sunshine to warm it faster.

Burning can only be done when the weather conditions are favorable, like southern winds and warmer temperatures.

That’s why Leki said Friday and Saturday could be ideal for burning. Temperatures will range from the mid 40s to high 50s over the two days. And with southern winds, smoke will drift into the vacant school grounds and across the river to dissipate, rather than nearby apartments.

Experienced people will be on hand and all permits have been issued for the burn. Neighbors and friends are welcome to witness the process and can call Waters Elementary at 773-534-5090 to join.
