Record-Breaking Season Ends for Amundsen Wrestlers

The team faced a hard challenge Tuesday at Antioch after winning a regional title for the first time.

Amundsen wrestlers won six out of 10 matches at the team sectional meet on Tuesday, but still couldn’t earn enough points to defeat Antioch. The loss ended a record-breaking season for the team.

The Vikings went into the sectional at a disadvantage, giving up four weight classes because of the squad’s shortage of wrestlers. They lost points for every match-up forfeited, putting additional pressure on the 10 competing athletes.

“We just need to get more kids on the team and fill in the weight classes so we don’t give up so many points,” head coach Tony Grygorzyk said.

Amundsen needed at least four pins just to tie with Antioch. Grygorzyk said two of his wrestlers pinned their opponents, but the wins weren’t enough to earn a trip to the state finals.

For next season, the coach is asking his players to recruit around the school, particularly in the heavier weight classes.

“We’re only graduating two seniors, so we’ll have eight of our 10 starters come back,” he said.

Two of those starters are Jerry and John Flores. The brothers placed first and third at the city meet, respectively. Jerry Flores was the first Amundsen wrester to become a city champion in more than 15 years.

The team also won their first regional title this season.
