No Flakes: Chicago Breaks Snowless Record

Chicago has staved off Old Man Winter for 281 days, breaking a new record for measurable snow.

The Chicago area set a new winter record Monday with 281 days without snow.

According to a story from the Chicago Tribune, if the area did not receive more than 0.1 of an inch of snow Monday, Chicago would set a record for the number of days between measurable snowfalls. A measurable snowfall is more than 0.1 of an inch, the Trib reports.

Although the National Weather Service predicted a 30 percent chance of snow showers and a high of 35 degrees, flurries stayed away.

And the streak may last even longer as temperatures will remain unseasonably warm later in the week. Predicted highs are in the mid-40s, according to the NWS.

This season’s lack of snow coupled with last winter’s below average snow total is not helping with the drought conditions the area has experienced this year, the Trib reports.

Last winter, the area received only 19.8 inches of snow. The yearly average as measured at O’Hare International Airport is 36.7 inches, the Trib said.
