Driver Of Car Hit By Train In Manhattan Went Around Gates: Metra
The incident happened Tuesday just before 7 p.m.

MANHATTAN, IL — The driver of a car struck by a Metra train Tuesday evening in Manhattan had attempted to drive around the gates, according to reports.
Emergency radio calls indicate the driver of the car tried to go around the gates on Cedar Road south of Delaney, before it was struck by SouthWest Service Train 821 just before 7 p.m., said Metra Public Relations Manager Meg Thomas-Reile.
Will County Sheriff's Police said the 52-year-old driver of the 2024 Volkswagen exited the vehicle without assistance. The vehicle sustained heavy front-end damage, Will County Sheriff's Spokesperson Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

The driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries, Manhattan Fire Protection District Chief Steve Malone said. Five passengers on the train refused treatment at the scene, Malone said.
Deputies closed Cedar Road from Delaney to Baker for several hours following the crash.
