Family Dog Killed In Fire At Peotone Home: Authorities
Emergency personnel found the dog inside the home but attempts to resuscitate the animal were unsuccessful.
PEOTONE, IL — A dog perished Sunday in a residential fire in Peotone, according to authorities.
Firefighters responded around 11:30 a.m. to a one-story home in the 300 block of West Street, where they found heavy smoke and flames coming from the kitchen, authorities said.
Bystanders reported all the human occupants were outside the home but the family’s dog was missing, according to the Manhattan Fire Protection District. Emergency personnel found the dog inside but attempts to resuscitate the animal were unsuccessful, authorities said.

“With great sympathy, we ultimately could not save the families beloved companion,” Deputy Chief David Piper said in a news release. “The Manhattan Fire Protection District would like to take this opportunity to remind our residents of the importance of having working smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in their homes.”
The cause of the blaze is under investigation, according to authorities.

More than 30 firefighters responded, with agencies in Manhattan, Monee, Beecher, Frankfort, Manteno and New Lenox assisting, authorities said. Fire agencies from Mokena, University Park, East Joliet and Channahon covered the Manhattan district station during the incident.
Households should have a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice each year, according to authorities. In the event of a fire, do not stop to search for pets and belongings, authorities said, but do know the address and town you are calling from when contacting 911.
