Vision For Manhattan Downtown The Focus Of Community Open House

MANHATTAN, IL — Village officials are inviting Manhattan residents and business owners to an open house set for Wednesday, June 14 from 3 to 7 p.m., at the Manhattan Township Hall, 230 S. Wabash Street in Manhattan. The main purpose of the open house is to unveil the downtown redevelopment concept plans and gather input from the public.

"We invite all our residents, local businesses, and other stakeholders to this exiting public open house," said Mayor Mike Adrieansen. "The concept plan is another step in our overall efforts to create additional economic development opportunities and balance new development with the quality of life for our residents."

The Village began work on this project in August of 2022 and has been working with other Manhattan area taxing bodies to develop the concept plan. Key partners include the Manhattan Park District, Manhattan-Elwood Library District, and the Manhattan Fire Protection District.

"Village staff has been working with the other taxing bodies to develop a plan that has the best interests of our residents in mind," said Village Administrator Nick Palmer. "This concept plan is not the end of the process, but another step in determining what are the best types of businesses and development that are appropriate for the Manhattan community. The Village wants to honor Manhattan’s past, but also plan for the future growth and be welcoming to families in the downtown area."

Ken Chastain is a Senior Manager with the Farnsworth Group and has been working with the Village on this plan.

"Downtown Manhattan has so many strengths to build on: committed businesses, the history of the railroad and a nationally significant US highway," Chastain said. "With input from downtown stakeholders and a close partnership with the Park and Library leaders, this Redevelopment Plan will create new opportunities for economic development, community gathering spaces and a more livable downtown.
