20 Residents Displaced, 2 Firefighters Hurt In Mokena Apartment Fire
The fire happened Tuesday afternoon in the 10700 block of Mary Lane in Mokena.
MOKENA, IL — Twenty people were displaced after a fire in two apartments in a building on Mary Lane in Mokena Tuesday afternoon, fire officials said.
At 3:26 PM on May 28, the Mokena Fire Protection District were called to a structure fire in the 10700 block of Mary Lane. First responders on-scene at 3:30 p.m. found a 12-unit apartment building with smoke in the interior of the third floor.
Further investigation revealed a fire in two units on the third floor. Within minutes of arrival, crews began efforts to put out the blaze. The fire was reported under control approximately 20 minutes after the first unit’s arrival, fire officials said.

The two fire units suffered significant damage, with some damage throughout the rest of the building. Preliminary estimates indicate that the building sustained approximately $100,000 of damage. An estimated 20 occupants were displaced; the Red Cross is assisting.
Mokena Police officers on the scene assisted two residents in evacuation; all other residents self-evacuated. There were no reported injuries to occupants or pets.

Two firefighters suffered minor injuries, with one requiring transport to Silver Cross Hospital, where he was later released.
Units from Mokena, Frankfort, Tinley Park, Orland, Homer Township, and Northwest Home, Matteson, Manhattan, Lockport, Richton Park, and East Joliet aided.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
