Back To School: Mokena 2021-22 School Calendar

MOKENA, IL — Back-to-school planning has already begun in Mokena, with calendars available to help parents prepare for the first day in Mokena School District 159, Noonan Academy and Lincoln-Way Community High School District 210.

The first day of school for most students in Mokena is Aug. 18.

Heading into the upcoming school year, some dates are subject to change as the coronavirus pandemic nears its year-and-a-half point. A mix of in-person, virtual and hybrid learning is still possible in Mokena.

A proposed mask policy for Mokena School District 159 was sent to parents July 30. The D159 Board of Education is expected to vote on the final policy at its Aug. 11 meeting. The proposed policy states: "As long as the community transmission rate of the COVID-19 virus is not high, Mokena School District 159 will recommend, but not require, masking for students and staff. Should the transmission rate of the virus become high, or contact tracing reveals evidence of transmission inside of our schools, the wearing of masks may be mandated."

The mask policy for Noonan Academy was posted to its website and Patch July 21. It states: "Last week the CDC issued new guidance for school operations in regards to COVID-19. These guidelines were adopted by the Illinois Department of Public Health and the Illinois State Board of Education. In review of the new guidelines, Noonan Academy will no longer be mandating universal masking of students and staff, with the exception of transportation. If you wish your child to wear a mask while attending Noonan Academy, please contact [Principal Joseph Dunn] so [he] can ensure we enforce your wish."

The latest mask policy for D210 was posted to its website July 30. It states: "The CDC recommends that masks be worn by all individuals (age 2 and older) who are not fully vaccinated. Lincoln-Way District 210 is supportive of an individual who continues to wear a face mask in any setting. No assumptions or judgement will be made against those individuals who are vaccine eligible, but continue to wear a mask."
