Catalytic Converter Thefts On The Rise In Mokena: Police

Police said that the uptick in the thefts are mostly taking place in local business parks, but neighborhood residents are not immune.

MOKENA, IL — Mokena Police are warning local residents that the department has seen a recent uptick in the theft of catalytic converters and that car-owners should take steps toward avoid becoming a victim of the thefts.

The thefts are currently isolated to local business parks, police said in a social media post this week. But police officials warn that residential neighborhoods are not immune from the thefts of the valuable car parts, which are typically sold because of the value of the metals found in the catalytic converters.

Police are offering the following tips to help protect local residents from having their vehicle damaged:

  • Residents should know if their car is a likely target. Hybrids, SUVs and trucks have valuable or easily removable catalytic converters.
  • Residents should park in well-lit areas close to public entrances, regularly move their car’s spot or use a closed garage.
  • Install an anti-theft device.
  • Install motion-sensitive lights and cameras in residential parking areas.
