Dan's Homemade Candies Makes Mokena Home

The Mokena Chamber of Commerce sponsored a ribbon cutting ceremony for Dan's Homemade Candies.

A dreary rain Thursday didn't stop fans of Dan's Homemade Candies from coming out to a ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome a sweet group of entrepreneurs to Mokena.

Dan's Homemade Candies, 11400 W. Lincoln Highway, opened its third store along the busy Route 30 Corridor. The family owned business made their guests feel right at home by offering a variety of delectable delights as samples.

The business, which is owned by Karen Nolan, is a family venture.  In one way or another, the bulk of employees at Dan's are run by members of the Nelson Family. A sister and store manager, Kelly Bostjancic, makes sure that customers feel right at home when they enter the doors of the charming candy shop. The shop sells everything from caramels, English Toffee, cream centers, milk, dark and white chocolate selections along with truffles and pecan and caramel Dandies.

This is Dan's third shop. The first facility still calls the East Side of Joliet home, where it has operated since 1919.  A larger store is located at 1003 Plainfield Road in Joliet. Bostjancic can rattle off the company's history as fast as a grandmother can name her brood of grandchildren.

Dan's is the second longest running business in Joliet, opening its doors in 1919. After having three previous owners, Dan’s is now currently owned and operated by the Nelson family in Joliet. "Five of six sisters work side by side to bring you some of the finest gourmet chocolates, made from real ingredients and real chocolate. While some confectionary stores offer you chocolate flavored items, Dan’s brings you the real deal," according to the company's website.

And just in time for Valentine's Day, the group decided to show their love by featuring any number of heart-shaped delights. Red boxes and chocolates were plentiful along with customer favorites, anise and sour poppers.

Store hours are: 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Saturday. If you can't make it to the store, shop for your favorites online at Dan's Homemade Candies.
