Free Senior Luncheon Hosted By Mokena Fire Dept. Set For Nov. 10

The Mokena Fire Protection District will host the luncheon and provide seniors with information about its residential Knox-Box program.

MOKENA, IL — Seniors in Mokena can get a free lunch and learn valuable information about the Mokena Fire Protection District's Knox-Box program during its Free Senior Luncheon.

The free event is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 10 at the Mokena FPD's Station #1, 19853 S. Wolf Road. Attendees will hear a presentation by Fire Marshal Tom Murry on Knox-Boxes, with a question and answer session to follow, said Mokena FPD Chief Joesph Cirelli.

Knox-Boxes are secure boxes that residents can use on their property to safely store a key to the home, in the event that Mokena firefighters or paramedics need to gain access to the home, Cirelli explained. Only the Mokena FPD has access to the Knox-Boxes, Cirelli said.

"We use them on residences for if a person is having difficulty opening the door — for example, whether they're wheelchair-bound or whatever the case may be — a lot of homeowners will elect to install a Knox-Box on their homes," Cirelli said. "The ones for the residents either hang over the door or attach to the door; they're not embedded into the concrete or into the brickwork or anything permanent like that."

Members of the Mokena FPD and Murry will be available for the Q&A session following the presentation to answer any questions.
