Go Fish! Mokena OKs Fishing In Designated Village-Owned Ponds

Fishing approved in specific Village-owned ponds, officials have announced.

MOKENA, IL — Mokena officials have given the go-ahead for fishing in designated, Village-owned ponds, the Village announced Monday.

"This initiative offers a new recreational opportunity for residents while ensuring the protection and sustainability of our natural resources," the Village said in a release.

Designated Public Access Only Fishing is permitted only at ponds with clearly marked public access points. Signage will indicate where the public is welcome. Ponds without designated access are reserved for residents of adjacent properties or those with permission from nearby homeowners or associations. Trespassing on private property remains strictly prohibited.

All individuals fishing in Village ponds must hold a valid State of Illinois fishing license. Children under 16 may fish under a parent or guardian’s valid license.

Rules of Conduct

  • Catch and Release: All fishing must follow a catch-and-release policy to help maintain fish populations.
  • Daylight Hours Only: Fishing is allowed from sunrise to sunset to respect neighboring properties.
  • Environmentally Safe Practices: Only environmentally safe bait and fishing methods are allowed.
  • Safety First: Swimming, boating, and ice fishing are not permitted.
  • No Alcohol: Alcohol consumption is prohibited on Village-owned or public property while fishing.

Environmental Oversight

The Village, in coordination with environmental agencies, will regularly monitor pond conditions and fish populations to promote a healthy ecosystem. If issues are found, corrective measures will be taken.

Enforcement and Penalties

Violations of the ordinance may result in fines of up to $750. Please help keep ponds clean, safe, and enjoyable for everyone.
