Mokena Board Approves Contracts For Firing Range At New Police Station
The Mokena Village Board of Trustees at its Monday meeting approved two contracts for a total of $702,837.

MOKENA, IL — Things are starting to take shape for the new future home of the Mokena Police Department after the Mokena Village Board of Trustees at its Monday meeting unanimously approved two separate contracts for an underground firing range for police officers.
The board voted to award contracts to Range Systems, Inc. and Carey’s Small Arms Range Ventilation for the construction of the ballistic component and the HVAC component of the firing range.
Range Systems, Inc., based in New Hope, Minnesota, will handle the ballistic component by installing rubberized ballistic paneling and ballistic steel on the walls, a rubberized material to collect the bullets at the end of the range, and sound barrier panels at a cost of $390,415.

Carey’s Small Arms Range Ventilation, a local company out of Tinley Park, will handle the heating, ventilation and air conditioning at a cost of $312,422.
"Construction started on the new police station. We're all very excited," said Mokena Police Interim Chief Brian Benton. "The ground is being bulldozed right now. The trees have all been cleared out of the culvert, and before long we'll be digging out the basement getting ready for the drop-in for the new firing range."

The Village broke ground June 29 at the site of the future police department at 191st Street and 104th Avenue, and heavy equipment began sculpting the land July 21.
The construction contract bid for the police station was awarded in April to Henry Bros. Co. in the amount of $15,954,000. The Village later approved an ordinance to issue general obligation promissory notes in an amount not to exceed $7 million June 13 to help pay for the construction.
The new police station will have a community plaza, community room for hosting meetings and other gatherings, a fitness center, firing range, and will feature the latest in advanced technology, according to the Village.
