MOKENA, IL — A 44-year-old Mokena man faces criminal charges after police say that he fired shots near residential rental unit and then lied to police about his identity and the fact that he had a gun.

Arin Schuit has been charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, reckless discharge of a firearm and obstructing a police officer. Schuit was arrested on Monday night after Will County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the 18000 block of South Wolf Road in Mokena around 9 p.m. for the report of shots being fired.

A resident of one of the rental units said he heard two shots fired around 8:30 p.m. The deputies looked around the area and found two 9 mm shell casings near a garage door, police said. Deputies knocked on the door of Schuit’s residence and said Schuit answered the door.

Authorities said Schuit told police that he did not hear any shots fired and that he did not own any guns. However, deputies noticed that Schuit was standing with his arm hidden behind a door frame. Deputies then said that they noticed that Schuit had a gun in his hand, police said.

Schuit was arrested and police said that no other people were in the residence. No one was injured.
