Mokena's Curtain Call Theatre Presents 'Inherit the Wind' This Fall
Performances are set for Sept. 26–28 and Oct. 3–5.
MOKENA, IL — Curtain Call Theatre is proud to announce its production of Inherit the Wind, directed by Jo O’Brien, running September 26–October 5. The play inspired the iconic 1960 film of the same name, starring Spencer Tracy and Gene Kelly.
Inherit the Wind is a classic American drama inspired by the landmark 1925 Scopes “Monkey Trial.” While fictionalized, the play delves deep into timeless questions of intellectual freedom, censorship, and the clash between science and religion. The play was written by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, and was first staged in 1955.
The story centers on Bertram Cates, a small-town teacher arrested for teaching Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution. As the trial unfolds, the courtroom becomes a battleground of ideas. Matthew Harrison Brady, a powerful politician, defends traditional religious values, while the fiery defense attorney Henry Drummond fights for freedom of thought and the right to challenge established beliefs.
