Residents, Car Enthusiasts Burn Rubber to Cruise Nights

The Mokena Downtown Merchants are host cruise nights along Front Street, every Sunday through September from 5-8 p.m. Free food and beverages are available for those who attend the events.

Summertime is the right time for cruise nights, when cars of all makes and models line local streets and residents can talk all things engine with fellow enthusiasts.

In previous years, most motor heads would roll into , for a cruise night hosted by the Mokena Mayors' Charitable Foundation. However, last year another cruise night popped up along Front Street in downtown Mokena, hosted by the Downtown Mokena Merchants.

Currently, the Downtown Merchants' cruise night is the only one up and running. The cruise night takes place from 5 to 8 p.m. along Front Street, with cars parking in the diagonal parking spots along the street.

“The cruise nights have been moved back to downtown Mokena, back where they started,” said Charlene Bergman, a spokesperson for the Downtown Mokena Merchants.

Bergman added that cruise nights on Front Street feature hot dogs, hamburgers and beverages at no cost, although a donation is encouraged. The crowd can bop to '50s and '60s music throughout the free event.

“We're trying to just put another venue on the street to bring people to the downtown area,” Bergman said. “To keep them involved in Mokena's downtown area. We thought this would be an addition to and it seems to be working out at this point.”
