MOKENA, IL — The Mokena Village Board of Trustees at its July 11 meeting raised local annual video gaming terminal fees from $25 to $250 per terminal. Action came following the enactment of State legislation late last year allowing for the increase.

Prior to the State law change, non-home rule communities such as Mokena could charge no more than $25 per terminal.

The adjustment comes on the heels of a recent Village staff survey of home rule communities in the area that allow video gaming. That study showed these communities charge an annual fee of up to $1,000 per terminal, with the average for the ten communities surveyed (including New Lenox, Orland Park and Tinley Park) being $455.

Local video gaming terminal fees are split 50/50 between locally licensed businesses and their terminal operator. As such, the resulting net impact to licensed Mokena businesses is only $125 per terminal.

For most businesses, the new $250 fee will be assessed at the time they renew licenses at the end of the current calendar year and will cover the 2023 calendar year. Any business that adds one or more video gaming terminals between now and the end of the current calendar year, however, will be assessed the new $250 per terminal fee immediately.
