Teen Struck By Lightning At Montgomery Soccer Match

The 16-year-old was reportedly watching a soccer tournament at the Stuart Sports Complex.

MONTGOMERY, IL — A 16-year-old boy was injured Sunday morning while he was watching a soccer match at the Stuart Sports Complex in Montgomery, according to media reports. The Fox Valley Park District Police responded to the incident.

On Sunday afternoon, the park district said one person was receiving medical attention from EMS. Several hours earlier, the park district reported that lightning had hit a tree and damaged a swing at another park district facility, Simmons Park.

Park district spokesman Dan Leahy told WSPY that officials had suspended play and removed teams from the field at Stuart Sports Complex at around 8 a.m. Leahy said the teen was hit by lighting at around 10 a.m., adding that some people were still outside during the storm.

Soccer player Noah Hernandez told WLS that he and most of his teammates had gone to their cars to wait out the storm when the lighting strike happened.

Spectators told WLS that lightning struck nearby and traveled along the ground, hitting the 16-year-old boy in the leg.

The 16-year-0ld reportedly remained conscious and was taken to Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora.
